HIKARI NITTA
Your name please!
My name is Hikari Nitta.
How long have you been playing Taiko?
I have been playing for 13 years.
Tell us about you, what do you do normally, besides Taiko?
I am currently a senior in high school. I have been part of orchestra since 4th grade (9 years), and have joined the Freedom Marching Band and Color/Winter Guard (4 years). I have been the captain since my sophomore year. I also have been a part of percussion for 2 years now. If you don't find me doing any of these activities, you will most likely find me running.
What made you start taiko?
I used to sit and watch my mother practice every Sunday at Rangetsu, and I told my mom I wanted to do it.
What was the most fun thing you got to do playing Taiko?
The most fun thing I got to do playing Taiko was playing at the Princess Marathon. I enjoyed encouraging and see all the runners.
Tell us your "funny taiko story."
When the teens used to have a Wednesday night class, we were always hungry and every song had a tune involving food. To this day Yatai Bayashi will always correlate with "taco, taco, Dr. Pepper yo..."
Do you have a favorite song? And why do you like it?
What honestly surprised me My favorite song would have to be Yodan Uchi. I enjoyed the contrast and dynamic the 2 drums make as you, the performer, glide between the 2 drums. It's fun to play energetic song that can have some twists in it.
What is taiko to you?
Taiko to me is preserving the traditional art and culture. It has taught me to see the beauty of traditional instruments as it takes you back in time for many centuries. Taiko is about enjoying music and friendship created in a rehearsal. Taiko is about power, and discipline, but most of all family.
